Tell us about your family?

I am a mother of a 6-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy. I’ve been with my husband for 17 years.

What keeps you busy in life?

I’m heading into my fourth year of the registered nursing program. The first year of the program started when my son was 3 months old and I was on maternity leave. The second year I worked full time while attending school. The third year, the hardest year of the program, I took a huge leap of faith and quit my job of 9 years as a technical analyst with the local health authority, severing our financial security. I volunteer at the local hospice house and frequently have an extracurricular children’s activity to accommodate into the weekly schedule. I also have a photography business which has been put on hold for the time being, only taking the occasional birth photography session.

Describe yourself in one word? Empowered.

What do you do in your ‘free time’? Camping with my family at the lake. Water charges my soul.

What is your favourite thing to make for dinner? Chicken souvlaki with Greek salad

How did you become a mom?

Careful planning, much research and excitement, followed by a hard birth that changed my life and leads me back to school for the second time.

What is your biggest challenge as a mom?

Guilt. A struggle between wanting to be around and showing them they can achieve greatness despite any obstacle.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you as a mom?

Showing up to pick up my kids after an exhausting day, forgetting my husband had already gotten them, then completely panicking that they were missing.

What do you want to teach your children?

Always stand up for what is right, even if it means standing alone.

What did you learn from your parents?

With enough hard work, I can be and do anything.

Your biggest piece of advice for new moms?

Do not be passive when it comes to the health of your family. Always ask questions and seek out the answers.

What keeps you going, day after day?

The net of support surrounding me, made of my friends and family. I’m not afraid to speak out when I feel like giving up and the outpouring of support never fails to get me back on track.

What is the most important thing in your home when raising littles?

Our family bed. Cosleeping is such a saviour for our family, never having to deal with waking children, and getting time together despite being away most of the day.

What’s something you said you’d never do as a mom, but did anyway?

Breastfed my child until she was 4. I had no idea how significant it would be to us. Now I’m on my way to doing it again with my son.

How do you take care of you? What do you do for self care?

I try to make time for church Sunday mornings, to charge my spiritual batteries. I also enjoy getting out for a walk, loading the kids into the chariot so I can walk my own pace.

Do you have mom guilt? What’s trips you up the most?

Huge mom guilt. Not being around enough. Being exhausted when I am around. Often not having the energy to be patient.

What’s something you need right now? How could a stranger help you?

I need encouragement to keep going. With one more year left in school, I’ve got many more mornings waking the kids at 5am, feeling like a failing parent as they cry while I’m loading them into the car to drop them off at childcare when I haven’t seen them all week already.

Tell us about your mom?

My mom is my biggest fan. She has always given me the respect and freedom to learn on my own and make my own mistakes. She’s always there for me through thick and thin. I admire her kind heart and strive to be the same.

Where do you spend most of your days with the kids?

In the summers we have a seasonal camp spot at Vivian Lake where we stay often. During the school year, we fit infrequent trips to the playground.

What do you think makes your community great?

We have access to so much here in Prince George, including groups for expecting, new, and breastfeeding parents, family activities including indoor and outdoor play areas, two swimming pools, endless outdoor trails and swimming lakes. Even in the cold winters, there is always plenty to get you out of the house.

Does your community need something more for moms and kids? What is it?

An indoor play area for school aged children. We currently have some great options for younger ones.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My VBAC. I struggled for years dealing with my first birth story which included a cesarean. My second birth, a VBAC, served to heal the lingering emotional trauma and left me feeling unstoppable.

Where will we find you in 5, 10, 15 years?

I feel like the world is my oyster at the moment and the possibilities are endless and so exciting! Maybe I’ll snag my dream job as a labour and delivery nurse and be hooked for life. Maybe it will lead to a return to school in 10-15 years for midwifery. Maybe I will continue on to become a nurse practitioner and focus on functional medicine. Maybe my computer science background will lead me into a role where I can influence the technology used by nurses.

Give someone you think deserves a shout out and why?

Thank you to my friends and family for all your support, and to my inlaws Maggie and Peter for all your help with our children during my crazy work, class, and practicum hours, making all my dreams possible.
