What is it about the May Long Weekend that entices an unbelievable amount of joy? Maybe it’s been the long never-ending winter, but the May Long Weekend feels like that first chance at summer for Northern British Columbians.

If you aren’t packing up the tent and running away into the bush for the May Long Weekend, you might try a few of these family-friendly escapes over the May Long Weekend.


Barkerville, located approximately one hour East of Quesnel, opens its gates around mid-May! Spending the weekend at Barkerville is always an adventure worth having.

Barkerville will open May 17, 2018 at 8:30. For a full list of hours and rates check out their website. Don’t forget your admission is good for two days, grab a room in town, or check out the accommodation options in Wells, BC. 

Fort St James National Historic Site

Fort St. James National Historic Site is located an hour north of Vanderhoof in the community of Fort St. James. This National Historic Site of Canada will be open daily starting on May 19, 2018 form 9 am – 5 pm.

What’s to see? Enjoy the views of Stuart Lake, soak in the history of the fur trade, and watch the chickens race. This historic site is fun for the entire family.

Get Your Garden on in Prince George

The Annual Plant Sale hosted by the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society is held on the Sunday of the May Long Weekend.

Likely Fishing Derby

Perhaps you’d rather be spending the weekend fishing? The community of Likely, 2 hours South East of Quesnel, hosts a Victoria Day Fishing Derby from Saturday to Monday.

W.A.C. Bennett Dam

Take a tour of the recently renovated W.A.C. Bennett Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre located near the community of Hudsons Hope will be open Saturday, May 19.

Take in one of the worlds largest earth fill structures, and experience the dam first hand with guided tours. For more information visit BC Hydro.
