Best Ice Cream Stands in Northern BC

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Whether you’re out to beat the heat with the kiddos or for a late-night dessert run. Every town has at least one place for ice cream, right? But are you a soft serve or hard ice cream type? We’re here to dish on all the best spots to get your cold creamy fix in Northern BC.

Frozen Paddle Ice Creamery

If you haven’t tried out Prince George’s own Frozen Paddle Ice Creamery, you’re seriously missing out. They are an uber local home business with a food truck servicing Prince George year-round. You can find the food truck at the farmers market, foodie Fridays, festivals, Serengeti Foods and also at the Little Prince Steam Train ride at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

And in the winter, they offer home delivery membership service. They offer local haskap berry, spruce tip, London fog, salted caramel, lavender, bubble-gum, stout and many more original creamy flavours! The double scoop is a generous portion…more than your average offering. Eat it fast though as this ice cream is hard, but meltier than your average hard ice cream. We highly recommend this scrumptious creamy ice creamery! Three cheers for Frozen Paddle Ice Creamery! Follow them on Facebook for updates!

Ice Cream Express

Another PG staple is the Peden Hill Ice Cream Express! Located on Cowart Road. This ice cream shack is open May to September until 8pm or later. Serving up Calgary’s own Foothills Creamery hard ice cream. This stand has a huge selection of your favourite flavours and waffle cones to boot. It has a slightly higher price point than Frozen Paddle, but the ambiance makes up for it. Ice Cream Express has 6 picnic tables with colourful umbrellas providing shade, to enjoy your ice cream.

Mr. G Screamers

If you’re up for an original Prince George treat…hit up any local Mr. G or 7-11 for a screamer. This half slushy half soft serve dessert is a local invention dating back to 1989. This dessert treat originated at local Mr. G convenience stores. But is now served at 7-11 stores in the area as well (the chain bought out many of the Mr. G stores last year). Take note as 7-11 may be offering up this tasty treat in all locations across Canada soon! Check out the story here!

Other places for a cool sweet treat in Prince George include the rolled ice cream at Sticky’s Candy, hard ice cream at Sandy’s in the Hart as well as at the Bon Voyage gas station and Menchies Frozen Yogurt!

Chill Soda Shoppe

Chill Soda Shoppe in Terrace BC is another must have stop in the North! They serve up delicious Island Farms and Nora’s diary free ice cream options too! They also treat your sweet tooth with old school candy treats, bon bons, slush puppies, floats and Italian sodas! Located at the start of the millennium trail near the overpass…enjoy some cool treats and a walk on a summer’s night with the family!

The Moose Hut

If travelling west don’t miss out on The Moose Hut in Houston! There is a sign out as you pass through Houston to detour to the ice cream shack, but if you miss the sign, it’s on 9th Street, beside Home Hardware. This little shack has great service and is also serving up ice cold Foothills Creamery ice cream out of Calgary, Alberta. Hit up the lovely park or walking trail along the highway in Houston for the perfect pit stop!

Frozen North Ice Cream

When you pass through Smithers, be sure to get your coffee and ice cream fix at Bugwood Bean and Frozen North Ice Cream located at second and main. This ice cream truck is a pilot project with the chamber of commerce to assist students in business and is run by local students. This will be open during the warm months 11-8 most days. What a great idea to support the community and the next generation!

Some other great stops for hard ice cream along Highway 16 West include: Shar’s Ice Cream Stand in Vanderhoof, The Bucket Bistro in Fraser Lake, The Decker Lake Trading Post in Burns Lake, Riverbend Ice Cream in Telkwa and Island Sugar or The Scoop in Prince Rupert!

And if you’re headed north, make sure to pit stop in Mackenzie and hit up Mr. Munchie’s for a good burger and hard ice cream, Azouzetta Lake resort of highway 97 near Powder King, Dan-de Sandwich and Ice Cream or Menchies in Dawson Creek and/or Jodie’s Ice Cream Wagon in Chetwynd!

We’re here to assist you and the kids in staying cool this summer. If we’ve missed anything please be sure to comment and let us know! We’ll be sure to take on a new ice cream stand…cause there’s never enough! Hurrah for ice cream!
